Mildred Mildred “Skeeter” McCaskill Kobzeff
August 7, 1917 - December 26, 2009

"D
id I tell you the one about the blond on the tour bus with her friend?"  We would say no and relax as "Skeeter" unfolded a plot that led to a clever punch line and we all enjoyed a good laugh together.

Thus was established the usual protocol each time we would meet this woman who was to become such an important part of our lives for the next twenty-six years.

We began our dream of publishing a historical magazine to capture the unique history of the community and its many colorful individuals in January of 1983.  We were blessed when Skeeter agreed to contribute to its fledgling beginning with our second issue.  She never missed a single edition from that one on for over twenty-five years.

Skeeter's incredible recall of places, events and people brought a freshness and excitement to reliving the past in Glendora. Her contacts over the years were amazing and contributed more information which she relayed to our readers through her column.

While we shall forever be grateful for her contributions in aiding the Glendoran in recording the history of our community, the really invaluable thing was our very close and enduring personal friendship.  She became a "member of our family".  We shared good times and bad times. We shared working on projects that only her expertise made their completion possible.  We shared appreciation for the past and concerns for the future. We shared the belief that our history was a treasure to be preserved. We shared a respect and appreciation for the work we all dedicated our lives to pursuing.

We shared the delight of a good "joke".  We are certain the 'Heavenly Hosts' are smiling now. (Skeeter - watch out for the blonds you might run into.)

We shall miss you, but we appreciate so very much the precious time we spent together.

T
his year’s 21st Annual Youth Edition again overwhelmed us in sheer numbers. From entries numbering over 1,100 our staff was required to choose those that best represented a cross-section of schools, students and subjects as outlined by our requirements.
We were, by space limitations, able to feature less than we would have liked. Advertising support was off due to our region's economic woes and we were not able to expand our page count to that which we had anticipated. In order to not disappoint some great kids who wrote some great stories, we decided to feature them on this website (extra stories). To those who were not included, we are sorry. To the many businesses, organizations and individuals who generously stepped forward to support this 21 ANNUAL YOUTH EDITION (see business directory here), we offer on behalf of the Glendoran, our many participating teachers and students, a big heartfelt —THANK YOU!
waggoner.png At a time when competitive swimming became so prominent during the recent Olympics in China, it was particularly timely that the Glendoran featured an extensive article about Coach E. Kane Waggoner (see page 18 of the Youth Issue). Waggoner was responsible for starting the very successful swimming program at Glendora and decades after having been the coach at Glendora High, is still remembered, admired and appreciated by his former students for the difference he has made in their lives. Recently Coach Waggoner was honored as the very first inductee into the Glendora High School Hall of Fame.
Sadly in the Obituaries section of the magazine are Charles "Chuck" Teater, former planning assistant for the city of Glendora; Sheldon Jackson, Ph.D., professor emeritus of history at Azusa Pacific University and author of the book “Beautiful Glendora”; Betty Chieves, local activist, volunteer and Republican devotee; Andy Mulhall, retired educator and administrator of Glendora Unified School District, and Rev. Richard Shackell, rector emeritus of Grace Episcopal Church.
